Giving with Passion and Purpose

Philanthropy is about more than making charitable contributions. It is about living according to your values and supporting what matters most to you.

Our Approach

Philanthropy offers a unique opportunity to enrich your life, establish or continue a tradition of giving, share your skills and experience and unite your family around a common purpose. It begins with what matters most to you.

Your advisor can bring you our broad suite of philanthropic services to help you maximize the benefit of your charitable contributions — for the causes you support, for your sense of personal fulfillment and to help ensure that your giving fits seamlessly with your other financial goals. This approach can enable you to share your financial success with others and create a lasting legacy of giving.

My name is Gillian Howell and I am the private philanthropy executive for U.S. Trust.

A lot of our clients today, treat their philanthropy almost like a business. So they’ve earned their wealth in a certain way and they want to be able to give it away and actually have impact.

It’s all about choices and so you make a choice first of all to give, and then how to give, what to give, who to give to. These are really important choices with significant consequences and people need help with that. And that’s where we can step in and really help them. We’ve got the expertise, and we’ve got the breadth of services and resources to help them navigate all of those choices.

People are interested in the tax benefits of giving and that is a very complex area. And if that’s all they need, that’s what we can help with; just give them advice. If they actually need us to implement and start a foundation for them, or a donor advised fund for them, we can do that also. And then we can also run that foundation for them. All of that kind of back office work is done by us, so it frees them up for the joy of giving.

One of the most fulfilling things for a client, but also one of the most fulfilling things for us in this business, is to help them achieve their objectives, and help them achieve their goals in philanthropy, and to actually see that change.

And we’ve seen that, for an example of that is where you’re supporting a program that helps inner city kids. Thirty children are engaged in that program, they’re working on a shoestring in the non-for profit, they barely have enough money to keep this program going, and a year later that program now has 300 kids in that program, and they’re engaged every day, benefiting from it, changing lives. And for you to go to that non-for profit and see the joy on the faces of those children, you know you’re achieving something major in their lives. But also your lives are changed by it.
